Yogatma Dr. V. K. Tatha Kakasaheb Waradkar

Waradkar high school came into existence in 1926 with the much-needed vision, foresight and initiative of Dr Vithal Kanoji Waradkar, fondly addressed as Kakasaheb, a doctor by profession and social worker.

Dr. VK Waradkar, fondly called as kaka or kakasaheb had been a great visionary. He had to face lot of hardship during his childhood for primary education, as there were hardly any schools in Katta Panchkroshi. Despite all these hurdles, he, due to his dogged determination and will power, completed his preliminary education from katta/Malvan and finally passed prestigious matric examination from renowned Wilson High School Mumbai. Very rare feat during the pre-independence era. After matriculation immediately he got job in Railways. With his sincerity and dedication, he impressed his seniors and was granted early promotions. Britishers were very happy and he was offered free education from England. However, his father did not approve this idea of going to England and therefore he rejected this offer. Though he was sincere and hardworking yet was no nonsense man. Therefore, due to ideological differences with GORA bosses, he resigned from the railway job. Dr Kakasaheb had liking for medicine so he decided to pursue medicine with Calcutta homeopathy college and obtained medical degree. On becoming medical practitioner, he decided to go back to his roots where he belonged to ie Katta Panchkroshi and to serve his own people. He started practicing by visiting patients on foot/horse in remote villages of Katta Panchkroshi and earned lot of good-will because of his kindheartedness, humane approach and selflessness. In addition, alongside practicing medicine, he was instrumental in providing assistance and advise to British government in forming gram panchayats in various villages. He was also involved in many other social and welfare related activities. Because of his immense contribution towards the society, Dr kaka Saheb was conferred with prestigious Kaiser -e-Hind Gold medal by then British Government.

While moving around as doctor in Katta Panchkroshi, he realised that the young children had been deprived of basic education facilities. For better job opportunities, these local youths were needed to get education in proper school, which was lacking. Therefore, he with his meagre saving as well as financial help from his few friends, started New English School in the year 1926. He donated his own land for the purpose and to begin with constructed 05 makeshift mud classrooms. Later on in 1948, New English School was renamed as Waradkar High School. Since Dr kaka Saheb had good command over English language, he himself used to teach english subject. In 1948, with Dr Kakasaheb's initiative, Old Students Association was formed and later on Katta Panchkroshi Shikshan Prasarak Mandal came into existence. In 1957, Waradkar high school was put under Katta Panchkroshi Shikshan Prasarak Mandal. The constitution of the school was first made in 1957 and was revised with few changes in 1964.

In 1965, Waradkar high school was fortunate to have its brand new 16 room double storeyed building. Laying of cornerstone of the building was carried out by then Maharashtra CM Vasantrao Naik. Later, over the period, school was visited by many imminent dignitaries including late Yashwantrao Chavan, Vasant Dada Patil, SK Patil, Dr Dhundiraj Vinod and others.

It is our proud privilege and honour to mention that the father of our constitution great Dr BR Ambedkar had stayed in our school building in 1929 when he had come to Katta in connection with court case. It is indeed a remarkable history.
